Someone brought in donuts at the office. I looked at the label stating “0 GRAMS TRANS FAT” and I wondered… How many people actually think that these doughnuts are “healthier” because they aren’t clogging their arteries with trans fats. Of course I know better, so I’m going to share a few facts on trans fats.
What are Trans Fats?
Trans fats are oils infused with hydrogen.
They raise bad cholesterol and lower good cholesterol.
Trans fats act like “plastic” and get into our cells causing weight gain and increased risk for
They are found in fried food and packaged foods, especially baked goods.
It is against the LAW to cook with Trans Fats in New York City.
When reading food labels look for the words
Partially hydrogenated oils
Hydrogenated oils (Note: If a product states “Fully hydrogenated oil” then it is not a trans fat).
Mono and di-glycerides
Beware of labels that claim no trans fat because the FDA allows food containing up to half-gram of trans fat per serving to be labeled as 0g trans fat.
Even if the amount of tans fat per serving is small it does add up.
Most experts agree there is no safe limit of ingestion.
The Bottom Line
Beware of any labels about trans fats. Trans fatty acids contribute to clogged arteries and other health problems and saturated fats are not any healthier. If you see a label stating no trans fats then its highly likely a sneaky marketing ploy to make you think the product is healthier than it really is.
