Silicone is a hybrid between glass and plastic. It has the flexibility of plastic, but like glass doesn’t react with most materials. Silicone is definitely a safer alternative to plastic storage containers, but I still feel that glass is the safest option.
Microwave heating increases the likelihood of the plastic chemicals leaching into your food.
Tiny amounts of plastic might not make a difference right now, but overtime they will accumulate and have the potential to cause health issues.
A Review of Collapse-It Silicone Container
I received a Collapse-It silicone container from my mighty nest subscription. I love my glass containers, but I gave this silicone container a try. I used my new silicone container to take some soup to work for lunch. I opened the venting spout and put it straight into the microwave at lunch time. It worked well, despite the fact that I’m always nervous about putting anything besides glass in the microwave. Something that I really like is that it folds or collapses to save space. Another great feature is that its temperature safe (oven, freezer, microwave, dishwasher).
Glass still wins for me. The Collapse-It silicone is a nice convenient container and a step up from plastic storage containers. However I personally still prefer glass food storage containers. By using glass containers you can avoid any unknown long term health effects from toxins you can’t see. Why take the risk when you don’t have to?
